There is a man who secured a huge success after three persistent attempts in 1987, 2007 and 2020. He is the 46th president of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. He was elected with the highest number of the votes after a seesaw battle with Donald Trump who was up for re-election. Since the USA is changing as the power of this century, he is in a very important place. I wonder what policies the new leader, Joe Biden, will formulate and how much his government would affect our country.
Joe Biden, who is he?
Many people know that he was the vice president of Barack Obama administration. But I think they have little knowledge of his life which is like a drama. He speaks very fluently now. But, in his boyhood, he had gone through hard times because he had a nervous stutter. He stood in front of a mirror and recited a poem, shining a flashlight on his face everyday to overcome this. After getting over many adversities, he was elected to the Senate of U.S. in 1972. However, after only a few days, he had a terrible tragedy, losing his wife and young daughter in a car accident. Thereafter, he was defeated in the presidential primary election two times and he spent eight years as the vice president of Obama starting in 2009. In 2016, he decided to run for president again, but at that time, his eldest son died of brain cancer. Therefore, he had to withdraw from the election. Finally, on January 20, 2021, Joe Biden was elected and he was recognized as a person in the highest position in the United States through his inaugural ceremony.
His leadership
36 years as a Senator and 8 years as a vice president, he is a well-experienced politician. Therefore, the whole country has high expectation for him. In this pandemic and economic recession, Biden began his career as a president, so he might take on heavy responsibilities. I think the good leader is a person that promotes national development from a crisis and has a positive influence on people. What about his leadership, then?
1. Coping with COVID-19
There is usually a massive number of people who attend when the inauguration for the president is held. However, Biden instructed to control access of visitors very tightly because of coronavirus. So his government instead raised about 200,000 American flags on behalf of numerous Americans who died from the coronavirus. Also, Amanda Gorman, a poet, read a congratulatory message at the inaugural ceremony. The Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, wore double-masks, which became issued globally. Plus, the president and the vice president also wore double-masks in official events. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), double-masks help people to achieve high efficiencies of blocking viruses from entering and exiting the airway. Afterward, a few famous celebrities wore double-masks as their fashion, it is now in US fashion and is called ‘layered mask’. As the president, his behavior influenced many people.
Biden propounded that getting through the coronavirus infectious disease (COVID-19) is the top assignment. Then, he announced that he would present expansionary policies with the budget of 1.8 trillion dollars. Furthermore, his administration made wearing mask compulsory in public places and raises barriers to foreigners on their entries. If they are tested negative on COVID-19, they can board the aircraft for America and they must be in quarantine obligatorily for a week when arrived in USA.
2. Comparing Biden with Trump
There is a clear difference between the current president and the former president on their weekend plans. Four years ago, Trump used to spend his weekends playing golf with his friends at the golf course he owned. On the other hand, Joe Biden attended the Mass of the Cathedral and he stopped by at the bakery on the way home. Trump did not visit fancy restaurants as opposed to Biden. Therefore, Biden won favor from many American people.
Biden said, “I am going to restore the alliance and global economic cooperation.” He declared that his government would give his full support to environment-friendly projects by signing a contract to restore Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO) which Trump broke. He has tried very hard to remove the traces of Trump.
We can regard the White House spokesman as ‘the mouth of the president of United States’. The new spokesperson, Jen Psaki was acclaimed for her positive briefing. Because she is clearly different from the former presidents. Trump had communicated through Twitter unofficially during his office and his administration did not respond well to the press. The third spokesperson of Trump, Stephanie Grisham did not even make any briefing for 9 months. Moreover, his last spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany has talked to a reporter like, “I do not answer to ‘activists’.” when asked about discriminatory comment she had made. However, Jen said that she would do briefing everyday except weekends. She was assured to communicate with citizens well.
How will the government of Joe Biden affect Korea?
By starting new regime in USA, the domestic industry analyzes how America will affect our country. The economic policy of the U.S. is called Bidenomics (Biden + Economics) and it is highly concentrated on boosting the economy, relaxing protectionism and investing in eco-friendly infrastructure. As stated above, He would inject about 1.8 trillion dollars to overcome the coronavirus. It would make increase of American consumption and the exportation to America. According to a report from the Hyundai Economic Institute, if the Bidenomics pushes ahead, the growth rate of Korean exports will rise up to0.6-2.2 percent and the economic growth rate will rise to 0.1 to 0.4 percent. However, the institute predicts that the price competitiveness of export companies can decrease if the exchange rate of Korean currency ‘Won’ falls. Therefore, the economics professors say that the export strategy is necessary against this situation. .Many experts counted a cold war between the US and China’ and ‘the policy of prioritizing inter-Korean relations’ as the biggest factors of conflicts by the administration of Biden. Biden government wishes that when the United States Government put pressure on China, Korea government also would do the same thing participate. Also, the experts expressed concerns about the possibility of adverse effects because of the excessive speed of the improvement in inter-Korean relations.
Now, the President Joe Biden has many nicknames. “the oldest president”, “the largest number of the votes ever won”, “the president who had the most defeats on election” etc. He endured all hardships and challenges, and everybody has a good opinion of him. He has a strong and sturdy confidence that he can surmount every adversity. Trump who looks as if he has no fear with free-swinging remarks gave in to Biden’s naive honesty. Although his successful election took place in USA not in Korea, he made us feel the admiration. Furthermore, this is one and only English Newspaper at Gachon University, so I think this big global event is worth dealing with. I hope many students at Gachon University will become interested in international politics through this article and keep their eyes on him.
