  W
hat is the meaning of December 31st? As the day that binds the New Year and the Old Year it holds a variety of meanings for different people. We may miss the year that leaves and make a promise for a more meaningful new year. Many thoughts are on our minds and we need to be ready to prepare for New Year. Wherever we are, one thing is for sure. It is the one day we want to feel hope, sharing love with family and lovers.
In Korea, we go to hit the Boshingak Bell, or go to the East Sea to see the sunrise to make a wish. What do people do in New York on December 31st? They enjoy the greatest festival out of the year. People hold *Ball Drop event and have a countdown to welcome the New Year in the midst of the festive atmosphere in Times Square, which is one of New York City’s landmarks. (*In Ball Drop event, the ball descends from a 43m height to the ground in the last minute of December 31st. When the ball finally touches the ground, it signals the New Year.) There is a way to look into that evening of New York, through the movie New Year’s Eve (2011), an omnibus film that is a collection of several short episodes around one subject. Let’s talk about some of the main characters in the film.

*Kim & Haley: Kim is a single mom who cherishes her daughter Haley. Haley wants to go out to Time Square with her boyfriend, but Kim prevents her as she believes her daughter is too young.
*Claire & Stan: Claire is the one in charge of the Ball Drop event, one of the largest annual events in New York City. She strives to makes the event successful, better than ever, while her father Stan who is a cancer patient wants to see the event to create memories with his daughter before he dies.
*Laura & Jensen: As a chef Laura cooks at the New Year’s Eve party and meets her previous lover Jensen who came to the party to sing. He apologizes to her and wants to begin their relationship again, but she refuses.
*Ingrid & Paul: Ingrid in her middle age decides to quit her job. She requests Paul to help her complete her wishes on the list before the day ends.
*Randy & Elise: Randy hates New Year’s Eve events but he accidentally meets and falls in love with Elise who sings in the chorus.

There is another story of two couples, who aim for the money prize for a baby born in the New Year, and another one about Kim and Sam, who promised to meet today a year ago. As such, stories of people in the film are all so varied, and we can enjoy the different characters and different situations. Throughout the movie, the characters realize and let us know what is really important in our lives. Hope and love. The most beautiful thing in the world is love, and it is not far away but always on our side. The movie New Year’s Eve shows us that families and couples realize their forgotten love, and how they look back on the year and welcome the New Year with hope and love. There is a famous line from the movie you may want to appreciate: ‘Sometimes it feels like there are so many things we can’t control, earthquakes, floods, reality shows. But it’s important to remember the things we can, like forgiveness, second chances, fresh starts. Because the one thing that turns the world from a lonely place to a beautiful place, is love. Love in any of its forms. Love gives us hope, hope for the New Year. That’s New Year’s Eve to me. Hope, and a great party.’
How was your year of 2013? It may be filled with a lot of joy but also many difficult things. You may feel the lack of things---but think of the past as a lesson. It is more important living valuably today towards a better tomorrow. If you want to feel the flutter of 2014, the movie New Year’s Eve is for you.
